Apple Dumplings (Easier Than Apple Pie)

“Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.” –Victor Borge

I love getting recipes from older women in the neighborhood.  This is one of those:

Make a syrup with the following, then set aside:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 6 apples
  • Mix:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup milk

Roll the dough 1/4 inch thick.  Cut into 5-inch squares.  Arrange 4 pieces of apple on each square.  Sprinkle a little more sugar and spices on top of apples and dot with butter, fold corners to center and pinch edges together.

Place one inch apart in greased baking pan.  Pour syrup over apples.  Bake at 375 degrees for 35 minutes.  Serve hot with cream or ice cream.
