Gingerbread House Dough Recipe

Capture

Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn’t come from a store.  –Dr. Seuss

This recipe is from my friend Shauna, the queen of gingerbread house creations.

  • 3 cubes of butter (Use the cheap stuff because you are not going to eat it)
  • 2  1/4 cups of brown sugar
  • 1 bottle of molasses – (I like the one with the rabbit on it- it makes the gingerbread darker — I get it at Wal-Mart)
  • 7 TBS of ginger
  • 4 TBS of cinnamon
  • 2 TBS of cloves
  • 2 TBS of nutmeg
  • 1 TBS of cardamom
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 7-8 cups of flour

I sometimes add larger amounts of the spices because it makes the gingerbread smell better.   Mix the butter and brown sugar together.  Add spices.  Add molasses and 1/2 water.  Add flour (I end up only using around 7 cups of flour).

I found that if you roll out the dough on the parchment paper, then cut out your shape, you can just put the parchment paper on the cookie sheet without having to try to lift of the piece.

I bake the house pieces for about 22 minutes at 350.  If you want stained glass windows, cut out shape and crush hard candy (jolly ranchers work the best) into small pieces and put them inside the shape.  The candy will melt and fill in the whole shape.

If you want to add Christmas lights to the inside of the house:  When you cut out the back of the house, cut out a small cube so you can fit a Christmas light cord.  When you decorate, I start with this piece first, so I remember to put my lights through it.
