Jessie Evans Smith’s 90 Minute Bread


This recipe comes from your grandfather’s father’s 3rd wife, Jessie Evans Smith, aka “Grandmother Aunt Jessie.”  Grandmother Roberta gave me this recipe.  This is a picture of Jessie Evans with your great-grandfather Joseph Fielding Smith.   This is a yummy bread recipe and it only takes 90 minutes from start to finish!


  • 4 cups warm water
  • 4 packages yeast (to equal 4 Tablespoons)
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 8 Tablespoons sugar
  • 4 Tablespoons oil
  • 7-8 cups flour

Dissolve yeast in 4 cups of warm water.  Mix in the rest of the ingredients.  Mix into a soft but not sticky dough.  Separate dough into three portions and let stand for 15 minutes.  Pound each piece for one minute, then form into 3 loaves and put loaves into greased pans.  Let stand for 35 minutes.  Bake loaves at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
