Fabulous French Bread

I first got this great recipe from my friend Julee and then saw it later in a Winnifred Jardine article.  She was the food Editor for the Deseret News.  It really IS fabulous and it’s easy to make.

“All sorrows are less with bread. ” –Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 3 Tablespoons sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1/3 cup oil
  • 6 cups flour

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water.  Let stand 10 minutes.  In large bowl combine 2 cups hot water, sugar, salt, oil and 3 cups flour.  Beat well.  Stir in dissolved yeast.  stir in remaining flour.  Beat well.  Let rest 10 minutes.  Beat well, rest 10 minutes.  Repeat that process for one hour total.  Turn dough out onto floured cloth.  Divide in half.  Roll each half into 9×12 rectangle.  Roll loosely (the long side).  Place both rolls on greased cookie sheet.  Make 4 diagonal slashes in each loaf.  Cover.  Let rise 30 minutes.  Cover with foil loosely.  Bake at 400 degrees for 30-35 minutes.  Remove foil last five minutes.
